How Natural Disaster Risk is Calculated
ClimateRiskCheck uses data from the FEMA National Risk Index (NRI), a comprehensive dataset that scores every US county across 18 natural hazard types including flood, earthquake, wildfire, tornado, hurricane, hail, extreme heat, and more. Scores are normalized to a 1โ10 scale (10 = highest risk) for easy comparison across locations.
ZIP code and city scores are derived from their parent county FEMA data. The overall score is the average of all 18 hazard scores. Always verify important decisions with your local emergency management office and a licensed insurance provider.
What the Scores Mean
8โ10 (Very High): Significantly elevated risk โ multiple serious hazards. 6โ8 (High): Above-average risk โ review your insurance. 4โ6 (Moderate): Average US risk level. 2โ4 (Low): Below-average risk. 1โ2 (Very Low): Among the safest areas in the US.
